Hanse is a German sailing-yacht brand built by the HanseYachts AG yard in Greifswald on the Baltic coast.
About the brand
The yard was founded in 1990 by Michael Schmidt in Greifswald, and it launched the first Hanse model in 1993. Today it builds sailing yachts of roughly 9 to 18 metres. From 1999 the hulls were drawn by the German studio judel/vrolijk & co, while the new generation from the 2021 model 460 is designed by the French firm Berret-Racoupeau. Hanse belongs to the HanseYachts AG group alongside the Dehler, Moody, Fjord, Sealine and Ryck brands. Since 2025 the majority stake in the group has been held by the family firm Müller Verwaltung, with a minority stake held by CEO Hanjo Runde.
In charter
In charter, Hanse is chosen for its wide hull, voluminous interior and easy handling; with a self-tacking jib and the lines led back to the helm, even a small crew can manage. The downside is the smaller jib area: in light wind the boat points worse on a close course than a yacht with a large genoa, and the broad stern pounds in a short sea.
