Boat brands
Lagoon is a French yard that builds sailing and power catamarans and belongs to Groupe Bénéteau.
The brand's first catamarans were developed in 1984 within Jeanneau's design office. Jeanneau later sold the division to the Construction Navale Bordeaux yard, which Groupe Bénéteau acquired in 1995. Models up to fifty feet are built in Belleville-sur-Vie in the Vendée, larger boats in Bordeaux. The hulls are drawn by the VPLP design studio, Patrick le Quément shapes the exterior and Nauta Design handles the interiors. The current line-up starts with the Lagoon 38 and runs up to large power catamarans of more than twenty metres.
Lagoon is a common sight in Mediterranean charter fleets, because the boats offer generous cabin volume, a wide cockpit and easy handling. The trade-off shows in how they sail. The tall superstructure and large windage mean the boat is slow to windward and makes leeway on close courses. In a marina it takes two berths, so the fees run higher than for a monohull of similar length.
