What sailing is like here
Between Mallorca and Ibiza is roughly fifty nautical miles, between Mallorca and Menorca a little less. These are open crossings planned around the weather. Mallorca’s north coast is wild and rocky, the south shallow and sheltered.
Season
From May to October. In July and August Ibiza is packed and the anchorages beside it are taken by midday.
Worth the voyage
- Cabrera
- A national park south of Mallorca with a limited number of boats. Mooring is on buoys only, and by permit.
- Formentera
- Shallow turquoise flats over sand and meadows of seagrass that keep the water clear.
- Menorca
- The quietest of the three islands, with dozens of small coves along its south coast.

Questions about sailing in the Balearics
Can you visit several islands in a week?
Mallorca with Ibiza and Formentera, yes. Adding Menorca on top means a lot of miles and little time in the bays.
What are the anchoring rules?
Anchoring over Posidonia seagrass meadows is banned and fined. Most protected bays have buoys that are booked in advance.
When are there fewest boats in the Balearics?
In May, June and the second half of September. August is the worst month for finding a spot.
