What sailing is like here
The west coast is jagged and open, the east straight and shallower. The wind tends to be stronger than in Sardinia, and the mistral can rewrite the day’s plan. Distances between anchorages are longer; for a week people usually take the south of the island together with Sardinia.
Season
From May to September. Out of season some marinas are closed and the weather is unsettled.
Worth the voyage
- Bonifacio
- A town on a limestone cliff above a narrow, fjord-like entrance. From the sea, one of the most striking sights in the Mediterranean.
- Lavezzi
- Granite islets in the strait, a nature reserve with crystal-clear water and mooring buoys.
- Scandola
- Red volcanic cliffs on the west coast, a UNESCO-protected reserve. Access is by sea only.

Questions about sailing in Corsica
Is Corsica more demanding than Croatia?
Yes. The distances are greater, the wind stronger and the shelters fewer. For a first cruise we recommend a skipper.
When is Corsica at its best?
June and September. In August Bonifacio is full and a berth in the marinas is hard to find.
Can Corsica and Sardinia be combined?
Yes; it is the most common weekly loop. The Strait of Bonifacio links the two areas in a single passage.
