What sailing is like here
From the north coast you sail to the Aeolian Islands, from the west to the Egadi. Passages are longer than on the Adriatic and the weather turns quickly, so you plan with a margin. The north of the island is windier, the south calmer and warmer.
Season
From May to October. The season here ends later than in the northern Mediterranean, and the sea stays warm until the end of October.
Worth the voyage
- Stromboli
- An active volcano that erupts several times an hour. After dark you can see it from the deck.
- Egadi
- Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo. Limestone islands with rare, clear water.
- Syracuse and Ortigia
- A Greek harbour where you moor right beneath the old town.

Questions about sailing in Sicily
Where do you sail to the Aeolian Islands from?
From Portorosa or from Tropea on the Italian mainland. The first passage takes about half a day.
Is Sicily suitable for families?
More for experienced crews. The passages are longer and the shelters between islands fewer than in Croatia.
What about the volcanic activity?
Both Stromboli and Vulcano are active, and access is regulated according to current conditions. Local restrictions change during the season.
